Forest Greens Golf Club nears completion of bunker renovation

(TRIANGLE, Va.)Forest Greens Golf Club – the Clyde Johnson gem just five miles from Quantico Marine Base – is set to complete a major bunker renovation this June.

The $435,000 project covers a complete overhaul of the bunkers with new sand and shaping throughout the 18-hole golf course.

Prince William County secured contractor McDonald and Sons to complete the work. The reimagined bunkers will follow the five-step “Better Billy Bunker” style. First, old sand will be removed and drain lines will be inspected; second, a layer of local gravel will be installed; third, ST410 polymer will then be placed in; fourth, polymer is cured for 24 hours and quality controlled; and fifth, the sand is laid down.

“We are fortunate for the support of our Board of County Supervisors to make this course transformation possible,” says Seth Hendler-Voss, director of parks and recreation. “The result will be immaculate bunkers which will have an undeniable effect on the entire layout.”

Forest Greens enjoys longstanding designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” by Audubon International. For five years, it has maintained sound practices in six key areas: environmental planning, wildlife and habitat management, outreach and education, chemical use reduction, water conservation and water quality management.

The layout features a nice variety of holes including a couple of short par-4’s. The terrain is unusually hilly for Northern Virginia and because of the lack of real estate in proximity, there is an abundance of wildlife.

“Forest Greens has been a beloved community asset for over two decades,” continues Hendler-Voss. “We look forward to welcoming back avid and new golfers to an even more enhanced facility than ever before.”

Opened in 1996, the original design was crafted by renowned architect Clyde Johnson in a classic parkland style. Set in the rolling terrain of Triangle, Va., adjacent to the National Museum of the Marine Corps, the offers challenge, magnificent vistas and natural settings.
