FIRST THOUGHT

Aerial shots of sporting events from a blimp have always been entertaining because of the unique wide-lens perspective they provide. But blimp shots are becoming dated. The 1955 Rose Bowl game between Ohio State and Southern Cal was the first the iconic Goodyear blimp provided aerial footage from a sporting event. Times have changed, though, and drones are now all the rage. This Rory McIlroy wedge shot prior to the Genesis Invitational earlier this year, for example, was captivating. In the sports seasons to come, viewers are likely to see more drone coverage, according to a Morning Consult poll, as 67% of the 1,497 respondents who identified themselves as sports fans said they are either very or somewhat interested in watching a sports game broadcast that includes camera footage from a drone.
