For 65 years from 1933 through 1997, Wisconsin was not viewed as a hotbed for hosting major or national championships. A total of eight USGA and PGA Championships were conducted, the most significant being the 1933 PGA won by Gene Sarazen at Blue Mound Golf and Country Club in Wauwatosa. Fortunes, though, began to change in 1998 thanks largely to the vision of Herb Kohler Jr., whose creation of The American Club in the late 1970s spawned Blackwolf Run (1988) and Whistling Straits (1998). Starting with the U.S. Women's Open at Blackwolf Run in 1998, the courses have combined to host three PGAs, two U.S. Women's Opens, a U.S. Senior Open and the 2021 Ryder Cup. Also, the USGA has delivered five other championships to the state and has three more on tap through 2025. That will make 15 in a 28-year period.
