The reasons for playing golf are naturally different for each golfer, but, according to the National Golf Foundation, the sport as a stress reliever is more of a reason for 35 to 49 year olds than any other age group. The reason "Recovering from stress/recharging my mental battery," was selected by 45% of this age group, followed by ages 18-34 (36%), 50-64 (34%), 65-plus (22%) and 6-17 (18%).

Died: Gerald (Jerry) Matthews, at age 88 on Sept. 15 in Mackinac Island, Michigan. Matthews served as ASGCA president in 1993-94. Matthews designed or renovated more than 200 courses, gaining recognition for such Michigan courses as The Lakes Course at Michaywe, Gaylord; Timber Ridge Golf Course, East Lansing; St. Ives Golf Club, Stanwood; Timberstone Golf Course, Iron Mountain; and Bucks Run Golf Club, Mt. Pleasant.

Announced: By the USGA, a multiyear partnership with Peter Millar, which will become the official outfitter for the organization and U.S. Open. The apparel brand will collaborate with the USGA on its suite of retail and merchandise offerings, including outfitting the U.S. teams for the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup Matches and the World Amateur Team Championships, as well as providing uniforms for USGA Executive Committee, staff, committee members and U.S. Open volunteers.
