FIRST THOUGHT

In most any other season, this week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship would be considered an opposite-field event, meaning it’s overshadowed by a tournament played on the same week and with a bit more gravitas. And winning doesn’t come with all the perks. In this instance, the World Golf Championship-HSBC Champions in Shanghai would have been that tournament, but it was canceled due to COVID. That means Bermuda is getting an upgrade. Normally, the winner in Bermuda receives a nice payday and a two-year exemption on Tour. This year, though, the winner also receives a trip to the Masters.
