FIRST THOUGHT

A couple of European Ryder Cup stalwarts whose hopes for making the 2025 team are not yet secured, showed some mettle Thursday. Viktor Hovland, 27, and Justin Rose, 44, each shot 7-under 65 in the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am to sit a stroke off the lead set by Russell Henley. According to Data Golf, Hovland, a two-time European team member, currently has a decent 47.8% chance of making the squad, while Rose is a longshot at 1.5%. A third Euro Ryder Cupper, recent Tour winner Sepp Straka, also shot a 65. He has a 48.4% chance of making his second Ryder Cup appearance this fall.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

At last week's PGA Show, new PGA of America CEO Derek Sprague and president Don Rea both expressed their concerns with a proposed golf ball rollback that is to go in effect for pros in 2028 and recreational golfers in 2030. What are your thoughts?
