Not sure the names on the PGA Championship's first-round leaderboard were on many bingo cards, but the seven who share the 3-under are quite the mix.
Here are takeaways from Day 1 at Aronimink Golf Club:
▪️ The seven-way tie for the lead is the second most number of players tied for the lead after any round at the PGA Championship in the stroke-play era (since 1958).
▪️ Thirty-three players are within two shots of the lead, topping the previous major championship record of 28 (1993 Open Championship, first round).
▪️ First-round course statistics:
— Scoring Average (Total): 72.261 (+2.261)
— Toughest Hole: No. 8, par 3, 245 yards — 3.506 (+0.506)
— Easiest Hole: No. 9, par 5, 609 yards — 4.795 (-0.205)
▪️ Scottie Scheffler's pursuit to become the third player in the last 25 years to win successive PGAs is off to a good start if history is any indication. In 2000 and 2019, Tiger Woods and Brooks Koepka, respectively, shared or held the 18-hole and went on the complete the back-to-back trick.
▪️ Patrick Reed (2 under) carded the field's only bogey-free round.
