FIRST THOUGHT

This week marks the 105th playing of the PGA Championship. The first 39 championships were contested with a match-play format and the last was played in 1957. So let's have a little fun, and see how well you know your PGA Championship trivia. Who were the finalists in that 1957 PGA? Who won? And what course hosted the tournament? Answers are at the bottom of the newsletter.

The First Call debuts a section devoted to the "game played on a five-inch course," as Bobby Jones once said, and how it translates beyond competition
PGA PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

PHIL BOWERS
Regional Director of Instruction, Prince William Golf Course

The First Call: What advice do you have for someone considering a career in golf?
Phil Bowers: It is a great field to be in, but you have to understand there is a difference between working in golf and being at the golf course. Golf is a lot of hours and hard work, but it is very rewarding if you are willing to put the effort in.

TFC: Do you have a preferred style or philosophy for teaching golf?
PB: I have always looked toward the teachings of Ernest Jones and Manuel De la Torre for inspiration on how to help the most golfers.
