Could this be J.J. Spaun's breakthrough week? His 4-under 66 Thursday gave him the outright U.S. Open lead by a stroke over Thriston Lawrence at Oakmont Country Club. Spaun, who lost a playoff to Rory McIlroy at the Players Championship, is holding his seventh lead / co-lead on the PGA Tour and second this season — the Players being the first. Spaun has yet to convert a first-round lead into a victory, though. In fairness, it's never easy to win wire-to-wire, especially at the U.S. Open. Seven golfers have turned the trick eight times — Walter Hagen (1914), Jim Barnes (1921), Ben Hogan (1953), Tony Jacklin (1970), Tiger Woods (2000, 2002), Rory McIlroy (2011) and Martin Kaymer (2014).
