U.S. OPEN TALKING POINTS
➡️ The 2026 U.S. Open Championship marks 130 years since Shinnecock Hills Golf Club first hosted the tournament in 1896. Located in New York, it is the only course to have hosted the championship in three different centuries. The event is the 126th U.S. Open overall and the 21st time the tournament has been held in the state.
➡️ At 17 years old, Miles Russell is the youngest competitor in the 2026 U.S. Open field. The Florida State University commit earned his spot through final qualifying, surviving a playoff with fellow junior standout Charlie Woods serving as his caddie. Russell previously became the youngest player in Korn Ferry Tour history to make a cut at the LECOM Suncoast Classic.
➡️ Padraig Harrington is the oldest competitor in the championship field at 54 years old. The reigning U.S. Senior Open champion is making his 18th start in the U.S. Open after winning his second senior major title last summer. Harrington is part of a field that features an average player age of 30.1 years old, with only one player aged 50 or older.
➡️ Three players will celebrate birthdays during the tournament week at Shinnecock Hills. Qualifier Jake Peacock turns 23 on June 20. During the final round on June 21, Tom Kim will celebrate his 24th birthday, while Scottie Scheffler turns 30. Past U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson turns 42 the Monday after the championship concludes.
➡️ The 2026 tournament marks the first time a U.S. Open will be played at Shinnecock Hills without any modifications to William Flynn's 1931 course design. Originally a 12-hole course in 1891, it was expanded to 18 holes in 1895. Flynn later completed a full redesign that utilized the natural landscape and created a strategic layout exposed to varying wind directions.
➡️ The USGA accepted 10,201 entries for the 2026 championship, which is open to any professional or amateur golfer with a handicap index under 0.4. This marks the fifth time in tournament history that entries exceeded 10,000. Ultimately, a starting field of 156 golfers will compete, with a 36-hole cut reducing the field to the low 60 scorers and ties.
