FIRST THOUGHT

Matthew Fitzpatrick, 27, of England, had climbed to No. 18 in the Official World Golf Ranking the hard way — without having won on the PGA Tour. By winning the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, on Sunday, Fitzpatrick checked off a few boxes. He became the 13th player to win both the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open, and joined only Jack Nicklaus (Pebble Beach Golf Links) to win both on the same course. He also became just the 14th player since 1990 — and first since since 2016 — to earn his first PGA Tour win in a major championship. In doing so, he jumped to No. 10 in the OWGR.
