FIRST THOUGHT

U.S. OPEN TAKEAWAYS

➡️ Wyndham Clark became just the second player since the Official World Golf Rankings began in 1986 to win the U.S. Open twice while ranked outside the top 30 both times. Clark, who entered the week ranked No. 34, joins Lee Janzen in achieving the feat. It also marks the fourth consecutive year a player outside the top 20 won.
➡️ Sam Burns finished as the U.S. Open runner-up after tying for ninth at Pinehurst in 2024 and tying for seventh at Oakmont Country Club last year. With the performance, Burns became the only player to finish among the top 10 in each of the last three years, continuing a remarkable stretch of consistency at the championship.
➡️ The final-round scoring average on Sunday was 71.389, making it the third-lowest final round in U.S. Open history. The average fell just behind performances in 2019 at Pebble Beach and 2015 at Chambers Bay. Additionally, it set the record for the lowest final-round scoring average across the five U.S. Opens played at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
➡️ Seventeen players shot under par in Sunday's final round, marking the highest fourth-round total at a U.S. Open since 33 players accomplished the feat at Pebble Beach in 2019. The scoring output remained consistent with previous championships at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, which saw 15 sub-par final rounds in 2018, 16 in 1995 and 13 in 1986.
➡️ Scottie Scheffler finished in a tie for fourth place this week, marking his 17th top-10 finish over his last 22 major championship starts. Scheffler joins an elite group of golfers to achieve that feat since 1950. The only other players to accomplish it are Hall of Famers Ben Hogan, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.
