BMW CHAMPIONSHIP NOTEBOOK

➡️ Five players — Gary Woodland, Wyndham Clark, Rory McIlroy, J.J. Spaun and Chris Gotterup — shot matching 6-under 64s to share the first-round lead at the BMW Championship. The five-way tie marks the seventh event this season, and the second consecutive playoff tournament, featuring five or more 18-hole co-leaders. Four of the five co-leaders are former U.S. Open champions.
➡️ Woodland holed out from 99 yards for an eagle on the par-4 11th hole during his opening 6-under 64. Woodland hit 17 consecutive greens in regulation before recording his lone bogey on the final hole. Entering the week No. 31 in the FedEx Cup standings, Woodland is projected to jump to No. 14 as he attempts to advance to the Tour Championship for the first time since 2019.
➡️ McIlroy opened with a 6-under 64 to earn a share of the first-round lead at the BMW Championship for the sixth time in his career. McIlroy is attempting to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 1997 to win both the Masters and the BMW Championship in the same calendar year.
➡️ Gotterup is one of six PGA Tour University alumni in the field. Meanwhile, the projection for the top 30 moving on to the Tour Championship shifted, with Woodland and Jake Knapp moving inside the qualification bubble while Kurt Kitayama and Bud Cauley dropped outside.
