PRESIDENTS CUP NOTEBOOK
➡️ The United States built a 3-2 lead over the International following Thursday’s opening fourball session at the 16th Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club. The Americans earned victories in three of the five matches to secure a first-round advantage for the ninth time in the last 10 Presidents Cups. The U.S. enters Friday with an 11-0 all-time record in the competition when leading after the opening round.
➡️ Justin Thomas set a Presidents Cup record with his seventh consecutive fourball victory, teaming with 21-year-old rookie Jackson Koivun to defeat Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria, 4 and 3. Thomas passed Ernie Els (6) for the longest fourball winning streak in tournament history and improved to 11-0-2 in Presidents Cup team matches. Koivun, competing as the sixth-youngest player in Presidents Cup history, earned a point in his event debut.
➡️ Adam Scott tied Phil Mickelson for the most career appearances (12) and matches played (55) in Presidents Cup history during a 3-and-2 loss alongside Ryan Fox against Wyndham Clark and Collin Morikawa. The 46-year-old Australian also set tournament records for most fourball matches played (22), fourball matches lost (13) and overall matches lost (29).
➡️ World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns secured the first point of the event with a 1-up victory over Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im in the opening match. Scheffler remained undefeated in fourball play at the Presidents Cup, improving his career record in the format to 3-0-1. The win marked the first victory for Scheffler and Burns as a pairing in four matches together at the event.
➡️ South Koreans Tom Kim and Si Woo Kim improved to 3-0-0 as a four-ball partnership in the Presidents Cup with a 3-and-2 victory over Chris Gotterup and Patrick Cantlay. Si Woo Kim extended his perfect career fourball record to 4-0-0, while Tom Kim nearly holed his tee shot on the par-3 16th hole to help seal the International Team's second point of the day.

Lopsided results keep the Presidents Cup in the Ryder Cup's shadow. Turning it into a play-in qualifier for the main event, writes Gary Van Sickle, would instantly inject global stakes and drama.
