FIRST THOUGHT

In the days, weeks and months to come, there will be plenty of analysis around what went wrong for the United States in its 16.5-11.5 loss to Europe in the 44th Ryder Cup. One of the main areas will center around American captain Zach Johnson's six captain's picks, which included controversial choice Justin Thomas. The picks combined for a 4-12-4 record — a .300 winning percentage — and six points. In terms of winning percentage, the performance ranks as the second worst by an American group of picks this century, And as bad as an outing it was, it still pales compared to 2018 in France, when a foursome of picks that included Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods went a combined 2-10-0 (.167 winning percentage) and Rickie Fowler accounted for both points.
Here is a breakdown of the Americans' captain's picks this century (year, venue, players, combined record, winning percentage, points):

2023 | Marco Simone: Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas; 4-12-4 (.300, 6 points).
2021 | Whistling Straits: Daniel Berger, Harris English, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth; 10-8-2 (.550, 11 points).
2018 | Le Golf National: Bryson DeChambeau, Tony Finau, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods; 2-10-0 (.167, 2 points).
2016 | Hazeltine National: Rickie Fowler, J.B. Homes, Matt Kuchar, Ryan Moore; 7-6-0 (.538, 7 points).
2014 | Gleneagles: Keegan Bradley, Webb Simpson, Hunter Mahan; 2-5-2 (.333, 3 points).
2012 | Medinah: Jim Furyk, Dustin Johnson, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker; 5-8-0 (.385, 5 points).
2010 | Celtic Manor Resort: Stewart Cink, Rickie Fowler, Zach Johnson, Tiger Woods; 6-3-5 (.607, 8.5 points).
2008 | Valhalla: Chad Campbell, J.B. Holmes, Hunter Mahan, Steve Stricker; 6-3-6 (.600, 9 points).
2006 | The K Club: Stewart Cink, Scott Verplank; 3-1-3 (.643, 4.5 points).
2004 | Oakland Hills: Stewart Cink, Jay Haas; 2-4-2 (.375, 3 points).
2002 | The Belfry: Paul Azinger, Scott Verplank; 2-2-1 (.500, 3 points).
