FIRST THOUGHT

The likelihood that Tiger Woods, 45, will walk the fairways of Augusta National next spring appear remote based on his comments Tuesday at the Hero World Challenge. Next year's 150th British Open at St. Andrews? Maybe a slim possibility, but it's conceivable that Woods' major-championship playing days are over. If that's the case, then what a run. Eighty-seven career major starts, 15 wins — a win roughly every sixth major — 41 top-10 finishes and a streak of 39 consecutive cuts made, which is one shy of playing on the weekend at a major for an entire decade.

Appointed: By the R&A, Russell Smith as the general manager of its new community golf facility at Lethamhill in Glasgow. He has assumed operational responsibilities for the development and day-to-day running of the new facility and implementation of its business plan, which will include the launch of a new consumer brand ahead of the family-focused venue opening in spring 2023.

Introduced: By the USGA and the R&A, a Model Local Rule (MLR) to further limit the use of green-reading materials. MLR G-11 enables a committee to limit players to using only the yardage book that it has approved for use in the competition. It will be available starting Jan. 1, 2022.
