FIRST THOUGHT

If collegiate golf had elevated events similar to the PGA Tour, then the inaugural Commander-in-Chief's Cup would qualify just on prestige alone. Over 54 holes Monday and Tuesday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, Army, Navy and Air Force battled for bragging rights. On Tuesday, Navy overcame Army's 36-hole, nine-shot lead to tie the Black Knights with an aggregate 1,360 score — the best six of eight scores over three rounds of medal play. Army was crowned champion after its seventh-best score in round three was two strokes better than Navy's. Air Force finished third with a 1,373 score.

PGA PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

JOHN DIPOLLINA
Director of Golf, Lyman Orchards Golf Club

The First Call: What is your favorite instructional tip to share with a golfer?
John Dipollina: Work on the short game all the time. You want to be the type of golfer who gets better as you get closer to the hole. If you have a tidy short game then you can always score. Hitting the driver well doesn't always equate to lower scores, great short games always do.

TFC: What advice do you have for someone considering a career in golf?
JD: There will not be one day in your career where you wake up in the morning and despise the fact that you are on your way to work. Working in golf is a challenge, but something I look forward to each and every morning.
