FIRST THOUGHT

Since 2006, according to the National Golf Foundation, there has been a roughly 13% decline in 18-hole equivalent courses — roughly 2,200 in total. In industry terms, golf facility supply in the United States has been contracting. And while that may sound ominous, there are other numbers during that time that show the industry is doing fine — 550-plus new 18-hole equivalent courses opened, 1,500-plus reconstructions and/or major renovations completed; and 250-plus golf course resurrections.

PGA PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

MONIQUE GESUALDI
Director of Instruction, St. Johns Golf and Country Club

The First Call: Do you have a preferred style or philosophy for teaching golf?
Monique Gesualdi: I love old school coaches with tough love or as Jon Gordon puts it, “love tough.” My coaching style and message is influenced by the greats of Geno Auriemma, MJ, Kobe, Rocky movies and those with similar mentalities.

TFC: What book(s) would you recommend?
MG: There’s so many, but I think “Burn Your Goals” (by Joshua Medcalf, Jamie Gilbert) offers insightful and very short chapters that pack a punch for players busy on the go. “The Art of Mental Training” by D.C. Gonzales is also one of my favorite for coaching too.
