FIRST THOUGHT

Think it's hard to win the grand slam? Try the Texas grand slam — Texas Children’s Houston Open, Valero Texas Open, The CJ Cup Byron Nelson and Charles Schwab Challenge. Only Adam Scott has achieved the feat and this week's Charles Schwab Challenge marks 10 years since he last won this event, which elevated him to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time in his career.

Shot Scope: Partners with the Southern California PGA for a special promotion to support veterans participating in the SCPGA PGA HOPE Program. Through July 31, Shot Scope will donate $25 from every Pro L2 Laser Rangefinder purchased through the SCPGA to the Southern California PGA HOPE Program.

Country Club of North Carolina: North Carolina native Jim Sutton has been appointed as general manager and chief operating officer. Most recently serving as the general manager at the Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina (2019-2024), Sutton led that club through the execution of the 2019 U.S. Women’s Open.

Belmont: The Richmond, Virginia, course will celebrate the 75ht anniversary of the 1949 PGA Championship being played at then-Hermitage Country Club with discounted greens fees and a 1940s-themed event on May 30-31. Won by Sam Snead, the 1949 PGA Championship remains the only men’s major championship played in Virginia.

NBCUniversal: Won six Sports Emmy Awards for excellence in sports television production at the annual National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on May 21. Two of the six Emmys — Outstanding Long Feature and Outstanding Editing (Long Form) — went to Golf Channel for “Unredeemable: The Story of Alex Fourie.” The feature chronicles Alex Fourie, an adaptive golfer who as a 7-year-old was described as unredeemable on a Ukrainian state document. Fourie was adopted and grew to find redemption and purpose.

Broomsedge Golf Club: Rembert, South Carolina, club begins the sodding process of its Kyle Franz and Mike Koprowski design. The fairways and tees will be sodded with Tifway 419 Bermudagrass, while the greens will be sprigged with another strain of Bermuda, TifEagle, once average temperatures increase in late spring. The course will not have any maintained rough, as fairways will bleed into native areas containing the club’s namesake broomsedge grass and other flora. Sodding and sprigging of all 18 holes is expected to be completed by August, with the course ready for preview play in October.
