PGA PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT

DOUG HAMMER
Director of Instruction, Troon North Golf Club

The First Call: What advice do you have for someone considering a career in golf?
Doug Hammer: Absolutely do it. There is nothing more rewarding. Keep an open mind when choosing your career path as you never know what part of the industry will drive you.

TFC: What is one challenge you currently see in the industry? Thoughts on how to address it?
DH: Player retention. We need to do more to encourage those who have recently picked up the game to continue to stay with it. With rates rising and not enough options for quick rounds, I fear we will lose much of what we have gained in recent years.

ROUNDS AND WEATHER
> Rounds played finished up 12% vs. 2022 as much of the central United States experienced significantly drier conditions vs. last year.

The Great Plains rebounded this week, finishing up 30% in rounds vs. last year due to the aforementioned drier conditions. The Central Valley region also rebounded, finishing up 15% in rounds performance vs. last year. This was driven by Midwestern markets such as Cleveland and Cincinnati.

> Pacing over the next seven days is currently up 27% vs. 2022 as we head into Memorial Day Weekend with all regions projected to finish ahead of last year.

The Northern region continues to pace the furthest ahead of last year at +40% due to continued drier conditions.

> Weekday golfers as a percent of total golfers held steady (57%) as weekend golf was once again hindered by heavy storms, particularly in Florida.
