FIRST THOUGHT

The U.S. Women's Open begins with 21 amateurs in the field this week — the smallest number since 2017 and a far cry from the record 68 who teed off in 1957. While amateurs are typically long shots to win, there is a precedent with France's Catherine Lacoste winning in 1967. Also, nine times has an amateur finished or tied for second, the most recent being Hye-Jin Choi in 2017. In 2005, Brittany Lang and Morgan Pressel tied for second at Cherry Hills Country Club.
