What is known as the longest day in golf — U.S. Open Final Qualifying — may extend a bit longer for Adam Scott. The Australian has played in every major championship starting with the 2001 British Open, but lost a playoff to Cam Davis for the final spot at the Springfield, Ohio, site. Scott, though, can still get into next week's U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 as the USGA still holds six spots in case there are late qualifiers through the world ranking.

KEY FACTOR
Going into June, El Nino is officially gone as sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific cool through neutral territory. Current expectations are for La Nina to develop in late summer or early fall, which will likely lead to a very active hurricane season. Pulling out the decaying El Ninos that were much drier in spring across the U.S. than this season, we’re looking at the rainfall totals from the years of 1980, 2010, 2016 and 2020 as indicators of what to expect in June. PROJECTED REGIONAL IMPACTS FOR GOLF OPERATORS > Similar years suggest that golf facilities in the High Plains, central/western Texas and in the Rockies will see drier conditions, leading to more playable days in June. |
