FIRST THOUGHT

While the Memorial Tournament is not a major, Thursday's opening round certainly had a leaderboard worthy of, say, next week's U.S. Open. While Adam Hadwin set the pace with a 6-under 66, Scottie Scheffler was at 5 under and Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa were part of a quartet at 4 under. None of the four have won the Memorial, though Morikawa lost in a playoff to Patrick Cantlay in 2021. Also, Schauffele is seeking to replicate Scheffler's feat of winning major this year and then winning his next start.
