RBC CANADIAN OPEN TALKING POINTS
➡️ A six-way tie for the lead emerged after the first round, with Sahith Theegala, Emiliano Grillo, Eric Cole, Brooks Koepka, Sam Burns, and Matthew Anderson all shooting a 6-under 64. This marks only the second time since 1970 that the tournament has seen six or more co-leaders after 18 holes.
➡️ Local sponsor exemption Matthew Anderson, a native of Mississauga, Ontario, surged into the co-lead in just his fourth career PGA Tour start. Prior to this round, his best 18-hole position on the Tour was a distant T77 at the 2024 edition of this event.
➡️ Among the veteran co-leaders, Brooks Koepka is seeking his 10th career Tour win and holds a flawless record of finishing T6 or better in every Tpur event where he has held a piece of the 18-hole lead. Conversely, Cole, Grillo, and Theegala are all trying to convert a first-round lead into a win for the first time in their careers.
➡️ Reigning champion Ryan Fox opened with a 4-under par 66 to sit in a tie for 19th. Meanwhile, the field's highest-ranked player, world No. 4 Matt Fitzpatrick, finished three strokes off the pace with a 3-under 67 to sit at T32.
➡️ Christiaan Bezuidenhout provided the day's biggest highlight by carding his first career PGA Tour hole-in-one on the 214-yard par-3 seventh hole. Additionally, nine players successfully navigated the opening round without a single bogey, a group that includes Canadian Adam Svensson and past tournament champions Jhonattan Vegas and Robert MacIntyre.
