FIRST THOUGHT

Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay may be the pacesetters after the U.S. Open's opening round, but McIlroy's 65 may be a glimpse of what's to come on Sunday. See, the last three times McIlroy opened with a bogey-free round in a major, he won — 2014, Open Championship; 2012, PGA Championship; 2011, U.S. Open. And should McIlroy go on to win his fifth major, he would set the record for most years between U.S. Open wins — 13. Hale Irwin (1979, 1990) and Julius Boros (1952, 1963) currently hold the record of 11 years.
