J.J. Spaun overcame a feisty field, an ornery Oakmont Country Club and, to an extent, himself to win the 125th U.S. Open. On a Sunday when the weather and course were trying players' patience, the 34-year-old Spaun birdied the 71st and 72nd holes to emerge as the lone player under par for the week — 1-under par and two shots ahead of Robert MacIntyre. Spaun became the first player on the PGA Tour since 2003 to shoot in the 40s on the front nine of the final round and go on to win. He carded nine-hole scores of 40-32 and was 0-for-6 in scrambling. Spaun became the first player since Webb Simpson (2012) to win the U.S. Open on his second attempt.
