U.S. OPEN NOTEBOOK
➡️ World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler enters his 13th consecutive major championship at the top of the rankings. Scheffler, who turns 30 on Sunday, could complete the career Grand Slam with a victory. He looks to rebound at Shinnecock Hills after shooting even par or worse in nine consecutive U.S. Open rounds.
➡️ Defending champion J.J. Spaun attempts to become just the eighth player to win consecutive U.S. Opens following his victory last year at Oakmont Country Club. Title defenses are historically difficult; since 1990, only Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods have managed to finish inside the top 10 the year after winning.
➡️ Shinnecock Hills remains one of golf's ultimate tests. Over the last four U.S. Opens held at the venue, only three of 624 competitors finished under par for the week. Raymond Floyd finished 1 under in 1986, while Retief Goosen and Phil Mickelson both beat par during the 2004 championship.
➡️ Early struggles do not necessarily eliminate contenders at Shinnecock Hills. Brooks Koepka won the 2018 title despite opening with a 5-over-par 75 that left him tied for 46th place. Corey Pavin followed an identical path to victory in 1995, sitting tied for 46th after his opening round.
➡️ A historic double is at stake this week for the top players in professional golf. Following Nelly Korda's victory at the U.S. Women's Open two weeks ago, a win by Scottie Scheffler would mark the first time the men's and women's world No. 1 golfers won the U.S. Open in the same year.
➡️ Adam Scott will compete in his 100th consecutive major championship, a streak dating back to 2001. Meanwhile, Xander Schauffele seeks to extend his remarkable streak at the U.S. Open, having finished inside the top 15 in each of his last nine tournament appearances.
