FIRST THOUGHT

There has been plenty to celebrate in golf these past few years, and golf course closures can be added to the list. According to the National Golf Foundation, for a third successive year the number of 18-hole equivalent closures is down — 50 through June, a 25% drop over the same period 2021. Also, over 90% of 2022 closures have been daily-fee public courses, and just over half were 9-hole facilities.

> Question of the Week: The R&A decided last week not to invite two-time British Open champion Greg Norman, CEO and commissioner of LIV Golf, to its Celebration of Champions. The R&A believes Norman might be a distraction to the proceedings. Do you agree with the decision?
