OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TALKING POINTS
➡️ The Open Championship returns to Royal Birkdale for the 11th time and will feature 14 past Open champions in the field — David Duval (2001), Padraig Harrington (2007, 2008), Stewart Cink (2009), Darren Clarke (2011), Rory McIlroy (2014), Henrik Stenson (2016), Jordan Spieth (2017), Francesco Molinari (2018), Shane Lowry (2019), Collin Morikawa (2021), Cameron Smith (2022), Brian Harman (2023), Xander Schauffele (2024) and Scottie Scheffler (2025).
➡️ Justin Rose returns to Royal Birkdale, the venue where he captured the Silver Medal as a 17-year-old amateur with a tie for fourth in 1998. Now 45, the Englishman is making his 23rd Open Championship appearance. Rose is one of just four players in the field who competed at Birkdale in 1998, 2008 and 2017.
➡️ Rickie Fowler enters his 15th Open Championship still seeking to break through for his first major title. Fowler has recorded 13 career top-10 finishes in major championships, representing the most of any player without a victory since 2010. The American's career-best finish at The Open was a tie for second in 2014.
➡️ Matt Fitzpatrick enters the final major of the year in top form after finishing tied for third at the Scottish Open. A three-time winner on tour this season, Fitzpatrick, with a victory this week, would become the first English player in the modern era to win four Tour events in a single season.
➡️ Reigning champion Scottie Scheffler looks to bounce back at Royal Birkdale after a rare missed cut at last week's Scottish Open. The world No. 1 had made 78 consecutive cuts prior to last week's blemish. Scheffler, who won the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, is seeking his second victory of the 2026 PGA Tour season.
➡️ World No. 2 Rory McIlroy aims to capture his second Open Championship title and continue his historic major run. McIlroy, who won the 2014 Open, completed the career Grand Slam at the 2025 Masters and successfully defended his green jacket in 2026. He finished tied for fourth the last time The Open was held at Royal Birkdale in 2017.
