FIRST THOUGHT

If there is a local favorite at this week's British Open, that player would have to be Englishman Tommy Fleetwood. And he didn't disappoint on Thursday, shooting a 5-under 66 to share the opening-round lead with Emiliano Grillo and amateur Christo Lamprecht. Fleetwood, 32, has six top-five finishes in 32 major starts, including runner-up finishes in the U.S. Open (2018) and Open Championship (2019). And since the start of 2017, Fleetwood is tied with Jordan Spieth for the second-most rounds of 66 or better (11) in majors. Brooks Koepka has 14.

COREY JOHN HIGGS
Director of Instruction, Compass Pointe Golf Courses

THE FIRST CALL: What is the best advice you have received on your career path?
COREY JOHN HIGGS: Work hard, back yourself and never give up. I had many days where I thought "I can't keep going," and on these days you need a voice of reason. I have had three great mentors over the years and all three told me to call them anytime when it gets tough and they will talk it through with me. Find a mentor. They have been in your shoes many times before and in tough times they will reassure you of the solutions that you may not be able to see. This person will be instrumental in helping you achieve your goals.

TFC: Where is there room for growth within the industry?
CJH: AI — artificial intelligence — will help us coaches get faster access to students' deficiencies. Apps that measure students' overall game, driving range and course analytics help us identify and diagnose solutions in real time.

ROUNDS AND WEATHER
> Rounds played finished down 3% vs. 2022, driven by extreme heat and wildfire impacts across North America.

The Northeast, in combination with seeing a higher level of precipitation, continues to see the impact of Canadian wildfire-caused smog. This has resulted in rounds finishing down 12% vs. last year.

California was negatively impacted by a heat wave that resulted in the spread of wildfires. This caused multiple markets in the region to be practically unplayable over the weekend and rounds finished down 8% vs. 2022.

> Pacing over the next seven days is currently up 24% vs. last year with all eight regions projected to finish ahead of 2022.

The North currently outpaces last year by 43% with the significant pacing upsides across the weekend. The next few days are forecasted to experience little to no precipitation compared to 2022.

> Weekday and weekend play held flat compared to last week as weather-impacted days fell on similar days of the week.
