FIRST THOUGHT

Rankings always make for lively barstool banter, so when the Ultimate Global Golf Courses list dropped into the inbox, there was the usual reactions of agreement and amazement for where courses were slotted. Money.co.uk, a credit broker for consumer credit products, factored affordability, accessibility and social media presence into a total score. At No. 1 is Bethpage State Park’s Black Course on Long Island. Rounding out the top five are St. Andrews’ Old Course, Carnoustie’s Championship Course, Pebble Beach Golf Links and Bandon Dunes’ Bandon Trails.

After witnessing the game of golf at St. Andrews in Scotland, Joseph Mickle Fox introduced his east coast social circle to a small five-hole course back home. The course was later expanded to its current nine holes.
