FIRST THOUGHT

The majors are long past being in the rearview mirror. Ditto for the Olympics, FedEx Cup Playoffs and Presidents Cup. But there remain plenty of PGA Tour players grinding right up until the holidays. One such player is Maverick McNealy, who shot an 8-under 62 to take the opening-round lead at the RSM Classic. McNealy, who has never won on the PGA Tour in 141 starts, finished No. 53 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and is currently No. 52 in the FedEx Cup Fall standings. Sure, he would take a win this week, but if he can just hold his position in the Fall standings, he'll qualify for two Signature Events in early 2025 — the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational.
