USGA makes major commitment to Oakmont, Merion

Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont Country Club, which hosted its last U.S. Open in 2016, is now scheduled to host the major in 2025, 2034, 2042 and 2049.

With announcement that 11 additional championships will be split between the two clubs, the USGA will now hold 18 of its championships in Pennsylvania through 2050.

The USGA on Wednesday announced that it will hold a combined nine additional major championships at fabled Pennsylvania venues Oakmont Country Club and Merion Golf Club through 2050.

Also, Oakmont will become the USGA's second anchor site, joining Pinehurst
Resort and Country Club as a venue that will host championships every five or six years.

The announcement came as Oakmont, located on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, is hosting this week's U.S. Amateur. This marks Oakmont's 17th championship.

“Oakmont and Merion are iconic in every sense of the word -- they’re in rare company in golf and continue to test the best in the game,” said John Bodenhamer, USGA senior managing director, championships. “We’re making history and kicking off a new era for our national championships in Pennsylvania, and we couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.”

Oakmont was previously announced as the host site for the 2025 U.S. Open, but will now add the following -- U.S. Open (2034, 2042 and 2049), U.S. Women's Open (2028 and 2038), Walker Cup Match (2033) and U.S. Women’s Amateur (2046).

Merion, located across the state in Ardmore, just outside of Philadelphia, was already slated to the host next year's 2022 Curtis Cup Match and the 2026 U.S. Amateur. It has been awarded the U.S. Open in 2030 and 2050, along with the 2034 and 2046 U.S. Women’s Open.

The announcement comes as a boon to the state, which boasts 671 golf courses and a $2.3 billion golf economy that employs more than 50,000 statewide, as reported by the National Golf Foundation.
