(BIWABIK, Minn.) – Giants Ridge – Minnesota’s leading golf resort, set in the rugged beauty of the Mesabi Iron Range, announces the par-4 13th hole on The Quarry golf course was highlighted in the “America’s Best 18 Holes Since 2000” feature that appeared in the August 2020 print edition of Golf Digest.
Continuing its reign as the best public course in Minnesota, The Quarry is built on the site of a former sand quarry and iron ore mine. Dramatically raised tees and hazards forged from reclaimed and repurposed mine land set this Jeff Brauer-design apart and provide dramatic Iron Range vistas.
Stretching to 323 yards, the 13th hole offers a wide fairway with a small bunker lurking in the middle. The large, diagonal and undulating putting surface sits atop a ledge that features native grasses in front. The hole provides golfers plenty of options off the tee from which to play. According to Golf Digest, “for those not willing to gamble off the tee, it plays, as should all good short par 4s, as consecutive par 3s. That grassy ramp leading up to the perched green wasn’t part of The Quarry. Brauer saw it and kept it as an alluring temptation for those who think they can bounce their drive onto the putting surface.”
Among the notable courses also listed in the “America’s Best 18 Holes Since 2000” feature are 2015 U.S. Open host site Chambers Bay in Washington, The Kingsley Club in Michigan, Streamsong Resort in Florida, Ballyneal in Colorado and Friar’s Head in New York.
