Named after the legendary PGA Professional and teacher, the Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year award is given to an individual for overall excellence in golf instruction. A fixture in the Hill Country golf community, Gathright is now a three-time winner of this award. Gathright was the original Director of Instruction at the Harvey Penick Golf Academy, where he worked alongside the teaching legend for three years.

“Harvey Penick was my mentor, and like Mr. Penick, the enjoyment I get from teaching is helping my students progress and perform at their highest levels,” Gathright says. “To win this award that bears his name means everything.”

Gathright and 11 other STPGA golf professionals and award winners will be formally presented with their honors during the section’s 53rd Annual President’s Dinner and Awards Ceremony on Feb. 15, 2021 in Houston.

In 2020, many of Gathright’s pupils excelled in prestigious tournaments. His students won the Southern Amateur Championship, the Texas State Open, the Texas State Amateur and the Texas State Junior Amateur. McClure “Mac” Meissner, who won the Southern Amateur, is also a finalist for the United States’ Walker Cup team.

A GOLF Magazine “Top 100 Teacher in America” for the past 20 years, Gathright came to Cordillera Ranch in 2016 from San Antonio’s Oak Hills Country Club. Gathright has taught numerous PGA, Champions and LPGA Tour professionals including Jimmy Walker and Notah Begay III, and over 200 high school golfers who have gone on to play collegiate golf.

“We are absolutely delighted for Bryan; he is truly deserving of the Southern Texas PGA’s Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year award,” adds Marc DeWall, General Manager at The Clubs of Cordillera Ranch. “The accomplishments his students experienced in 2020 speak for themselves, and his passion for teaching the game is unrivaled.”
