Top coach Devan Bonebrake joins GolfPass staff with launch of latest ‘Breaking’ instruction series, streaming today

One of America’s top teachers takes strategic approach to help golfers make practice count

ORLANDO, Fla. (Feb. 2, 2021) – Learning how to practice effectively for true game improvement is the focus of the latest GolfPass instruction series, Breaking Down Your Practice Routine, streaming today and hosted by new GolfPass instructor, Devan Bonebrake.

Recognized for years as one of the best young teachers in America, Bonebrake is hosting his first, full-length series as an official GolfPass faculty member. Breaking Down Your Practice Routine targets all facets of golf practice – from the driving range to the putting green to the golf course – laying out a clear, actionable plan for improvement.

“You can practice for hours and hours – really grind on the practice range – but if you’re not doing it the right way you can actually make yourself worse,” Bonebrake said. “Having an in-depth understanding of how to practice is the single-best way to improve your golf game, hands down.”

In Breaking Down Your Practice Routine, Bonebrake will emphasize his five critical components for effective practice:

  • Motor learning – learning the proper technique and putting it into action.
  • Blocked practice – gaining mastery over a skill by repeated drills.
  • Random practice – gaining mastery over a skill by modified training exercises.
  • Game-like training – a form of training that also combines a consequence and/or scoring elements.
  • Transfer training – taking it to the golf course.

The series was produced in two parts, with Volume 1 premiering today and featuring 11 episodes focusing on the full golf swing. Volume 2 of the series, premiering on Tuesday, Feb. 16, also will include 11 episodes and will focus on the short game and putting.

Bonebrake has appeared on GOLF Channel more than 30 times and his instruction has regularly appeared in golf’s top publications. He has worked extensively with many of golf’s most-renowned coaches, including Mike Bender, Jim Flick, Jim Hardy and Hank Haney, but credits mentor Jim McLean for having the biggest influence on his teaching style and business acumen. While working with McLean, Bonebrake taught notable pros, such as Keegan Bradley, Lexi Thompson, Len Mattiace and Erik Compton. Currently, Bonebrake spends the majority of his time in Southern California, as Director of Instruction at Rolling Hills Country Club in the Los Angeles-area and owner of the Southern California Golf Academy in Carlsbad, where he has helped dozens of junior golfers earn scholarships at colleges and universities nationwide.
