Legends take on the South Course in U.S. Senior Women’s Open warm-up
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (June 14, 2021) – The South Course at Moss Creek Hilton Head, SC recently hosted 16 players from the LPGA’s Legends Tour. Many multiple title holders were on hand, including Laura Baugh, Michelle McGann, and Hollis Stacy to compete with host Rosie Jones in an 18-hole warm-up for July’s U.S. Senior Women’s Open being contested in Connecticut this August. The accomplished field collectively represented 65 LPGA Tour wins, as well as several major championship titles, Hall of Fame recognition, and U.S. Solheim Cup team participation.
Cathy Johnston-Forbes, a major championship winner on the LPGA Tour, from Kitty Hawk, NC, took home the $6000 prize, shooting a 1 under-par 71. In second place was Leta Lindley of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, who carded an even 72.
The Legends Tour is the official senior tour of the LPGA, showcasing golfers aged 45 and over.
Rosie Jones, 13-time LPGA Tour winner, seven-time U.S. Solheim Cup competitor, and a resident of Moss Creek, hosted the event with the support of Newsletter Station, Morgan Stanley, and the Moss Creek community.
“Moss Creek has a deep history of presenting LPGA events, and I was thrilled to host my friends and legends of the LPGA for this one-day event that returned women’s professional golf to Moss Creek and the Lowcountry,” said Jones. The Legends played for a $24,000 purse on the private residential community’s George Fazio-designed South Course, set up to 5910 yards.
The Moss Creek Women's Invitational was an official LPGA Tour event from 1976 to 1985. Amy Alcott, Sally Little, Jan Stephenson, and Nancy Lopez were among its roster champions, as was Savannah, GA native and World Golf Hall of Famer Hollis Stacy (1980 and 1983) who returned to Moss Creek for the friendly competition.
