Montclair Golf Club’s premier racquet sports program riding wave of popularity

State-of-the-art new facilities, world-class staff helping to drive surge in new members

WEST ORANGE, N.J. (Sept. 9, 2021) — As the U.S. Open in New York City shines a light on tennis, it is clear all racquet sports have experienced a boon during the pandemic. The numbers bear it out across the country and especially at Montclair Golf Club, which is home to one of the tri-state area’s premier racquet programs with state-of-the-art facilities for tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball.

The Club is witnessing a surge in new members that dovetails with its ongoing $18 million investment into new facilities and amenities. Part of that facelift was devoted to Montclair’s robust racquet sports program, recently ranked among the top 20 in the country by Club & Resort Business.

The Club’s six new, state-of-the-art Har-Tru clay tennis courts feature the HydroCourt subsurface irrigation system, which ensures optimum surface moisture. These courts are available for all-day play and provide perfect, year-round conditions. Four courts are lit for evening play. Plus, the Club recently opened a new facility expressly devoted to platform tennis and pickleball.

The program is headed by Mikk Irdoja, Montclair’s director of racquets, who is the No. 5-ranked men’s platform tennis player in the country. Moreover, the world-class staff also features women’s national champion Florentina Hanisch, the No. 1-ranked women’s platform tennis player in the United States.

“It’s no surprise racquet sports are flourishing during the pandemic because people are striving to get outdoors and return to being social at the same time,” Irdoja said. “We are seeing a boost in both new and returning players, and that translates to both adults and juniors. And the great thing about tennis, paddle tennis, and pickleball is that they all are different and have appeal to different audiences.”

Montclair’s racquet program offers team practices, private and group lessons, open-play events, and numerous social functions. Also offered are inter- and intra-club leagues, and junior camps.
