Skins match at Silver Creek Valley Country Club raises $7,000
for The First Tee Silicon Valley and Youth On Course

San Jose, Calif. (December 22, 2021) – Silver Creek Valley Country Club in San Jose, Calif. recently hosted an amateur 9-hole skins match to raise funds for the First Tee Silicon Valley and Youth on Course, two non-profit organizations providing youth with affordable access to golf. A skins game/match is when golfers compete against the other members of their foursome, with a skin (usually money) awarded to the lone golfer who posts the lowest score for each hole; with no skin awarded in case of a tie. The skins match featured four junior honorary members of Silver Creek Valley including Sabrina Iqbal, a senior at Texas Christian University; Katherine Zhu, a senior at Cal; Caleb Shetler, a junior at San Jose State; and Francesca (Franky) Sumcad, a junior at Valley Christian High School. Approximately 100 spectators followed the 9-hole event, which took place on Saturday, November 27th. In total, $7,000 was raised for the youth golf programs, with $5,444.44 going to The First Tee Silicon Valley and $1,555.56 going to Youth on Course. Funds were raised by Silver Creek Valley Country Club members.

Sumcad won seven skins, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 16th hole, while Zhu won two skins with birdies on the final two holes. Sumcad is the No. 1 player at Valley Christian and carries a +1.1 handicap. Zhu is the No. 1 player and captain of the Cal women’s golf team and a former AJGA All American. Iqbal plays at TCU and has won the CIF State Championship, NCGA Junior Amateur, CA State Amateur, and SF City Championship. Shetler is a former Mountain West Freshman of the Year, a 2021 U.S. Amateur participant at Oakmont, Santa Clara County Champion, and the course record holder at Cinnabar (60) and San Jose Country Club (59).

Silver Creek Valley Country Club created its junior honorary member program to support young, prominent, local golfers to help grow the game of golf.  Junior honorary members have access to the club to practice, work at junior clinics, and be a role model for the club’s youth.

Nestled in the foothills of the Silver Creek Valley region among magnificent oak trees, a meandering creek, wetlands, and native grass areas, the golf course was designed to coexist with the scenic natural environment. Originally designed by Ted Robinson in 1992, the Silver Creek Valley golf course was renovated by award-winning architect Mike Strantz in 2002. Silver Creek Valley Country Club is San Jose’s largest and most striking private golf and country club. Situated atop hills overlooking the golf course, lakeside waterfalls, and the Silicon Valley, the 34,000 square-foot clubhouse underwent a multi-million-dollar enhancement project in 2016. The club also features a Sports Pavilion, which includes a beautiful tennis complex, fitness center and two swimming pools.
