The longshots to win the 151st Open

The 151st Open Championship is almost upon us, and there’s plenty to get excited about. After months of off-course news resulting from the LIV-PGA merger, we can finally focus on actual golf again.

The tournament is returning to Royal Liverpool for the first time since 2014. That year, Rory McIlroy was the winner. Perhaps uncoincidentally, he is favored to raise the trophy once again.

But there are plenty of interesting options to choose from in this field, from the big names to the underdogs hailing from all over the world.

Let’s take a look at some interesting potential longshot winners, with odds sourced from Caesars Sportsbook.

Rickie Fowler (+2500)

Fowler has been on a bit of a hot streak this season, with several top-10 finishes in tournaments already, including the US Open. At this point, Fowler is an experienced player who has spent time in the spotlight. When you throw in the fact that he notoriously loves windy weather, Fowler might finally be able to capture his first major, which many consider to be long overdue.

Russell Henley (+12500)

With impressive top-5 and top-15 results at The Masters and US Open majors so far this year, Russell Henley might just be ready for the big stage. The 34-year-old from Georgia has stepped up his game in 2023. If he can continue to build on this momentum, he has to be considered a decent bet to make a run at the Claret Jug.

Alex Noren (+30000)

The Swedish mainstay on the European Tour, Alexander Noren is poised for a breakout at Royal Liverpool. At the event in 2022, he had his best-ever finish in a PGA major and is coming off consecutive top-5 finishes in his last two European events. He hasn’t won a PGA tournament before, but hey, that’s why he’s a long shot.

There are plenty more longshots teeing off on Thursday, and while the golfing world seems determined to have Rory back on top, anything can happen at The Open.
