Apparel sales slowdown led by headwear

The retail figures for US golf are now published with sales data through August 2023.

After 17 consecutive months with improving sales between February of 2022 and July of ‘23, Golf Apparel was down for the second straight month in August, falling by 3.5% after a 3.6% drop in July

Only 3 of 8 categories were up for the month, led by Men’s Tops (+7%), while Headwear was the biggest decliner, -12%

Apparel sales increased in 35 of the 36 months between July of 2020 and June 2023, but they appear to have peaked.  However, it’s worth noting that they remain 56% ahead of pre-pandemic levels.

On the latest numbers, GDT co-founder, John Krzynowek, commented, “No product category can grow forever, and golf apparel thru the On and Off Course channels has been on something of a tear since recovering from the initial lockdowns in the earliest days of Covid. 

“Even with severely constrained supply chains, golf apparel continued to thrive. However there are indications that sales are slowing and inventory levels are growing, which could lead to an uncomfortable situation as many regions of the US are heading into their off season.”
