This year the World Wide Technology Championship moved to the Tiger Woods-designed El Cardonal Golf Course at the Diamante Cabo San Lucas Resort. Wanting to embrace the change, the World Wide Technology Championship sought out Malcolm DeMille’s help in creating a trophy that would highlight the iconic, local, elements of Cabo San Lucas. The team at Malcolm DeMille proposed several designs focusing on the breath-taking Arch of Cabo San Lucas.
The selected design has the distinctive granite rock formation cast in bronze with heavy textures and a bright rhodium plate finish to give it an iridescent feel. Within the arch a crystal is suspended with an etching of the World Wide Technology Championship logo. Underneath the Arch of Cabo San Lucas sits a transparent blue crystal that covers a sculptural ocean floor. The local sea life can be viewed through the blue crystal ocean. From humpback whales to marlins, dolphins, turtles and rays, the attention to detail brings the aquatic fauna to life. The stunning 15” x 19” tall trophy is finished with a granite base and wrapping title plate highlighting the World Wide Technology Championship logo and smaller Champions plate.
When Sunday arrived and the larger-than-life trophy was on the line, Erik van Rooyen stepped up his play making six birdies on the first eight holes of his back nine, and then hit an eagle on 18th to win the World Wide Technology Championship for his terminally-ill friend Jon Trasamar and his second PGA Tour title. In his post-win interview van Rooyen was asked about his thoughts on the new WWT Championship trophy, “I love the attention to detail.” While proceeding to point out the aquatic life details of the trophy van Rooyen went on the say, “Yes, it is going front and center. It’s just absolutely stunning.”
Malcolm DeMille is grateful that World Wide Technology Championship had confidence in our team’s ability to take the “local Cabo San Lucas” concept and elevate it to a truly one-of-a-kind trophy. This Championship Prize is the perfect complement to a memorable event that captivates the Golf World. We offer our deepest Congratulations to both World Wide Technology Championship and Erik van Rooyen for an unforgettable tournament!
