Balsam Mountain Preserve announces opening of new Boarding House Marketplace

Farm-to-table dining and local goods offered at gourmet market experience

(SYLVA, N.C.) – Balsam Mountain Preserve, a premier resort-style private residential community nestled high in the Blue Ridge Mountains between the charming mountain towns of Sylva and Waynesville, announces the opening of its new Boarding House Marketplace. This revitalized, rustic country market is set in the special Boarding House building – which once housed miners on the property – and promises to be a significant addition to the community’s amenities.

The Boarding House Marketplace is a collaboration between Balsam Mountain Preserve developer David Southworth and Chatham, Ill., natives Daniel and Emily Schroll, who operate the facility. Leased from the Boarding House Association – an independent organization within the Balsam Mountain Preserve community – the Marketplace offers food and beverage services that cater to members, real estate prospects and other visitors.

“Introducing the Boarding House Marketplace is a strategic enhancement to the Balsam Mountain Preserve experience by cultivating a thriving, self-sufficient community and providing convenient, high-quality food and beverage options,” Southworth says. “Driven by the passion of Daniel and Emily, this initiative not only adds significant value for our current residents but also strengthens our appeal to prospective members. It’s a testament to our ongoing commitment to ensuring Balsam Mountain Preserve remains a premier residential destination.”

For the Schrolls, this opportunity represents the realization of their business aspirations.

“We’ve built a place where the community can enjoy delicious meals, quality local ingredients and find a home away from home,” Daniel explains. “To have David Southworth believe in our vision and provide me and Emily with the chance to bring it to life is truly an honor. It’s a culmination of our dreams and a deep enthusiasm for food and hospitality.”

“This is a wonderful new chapter for not only our lives, but the Balsam Mountain Preserve family,” Emily adds. “We believe the Marketplace will become the central hub of the community where residents can connect, indulge in our delicious culinary offerings and even discover unique local treasures.”

Accessible to anyone on the Mountain, the Marketplace features food and beverage offerings including breakfast, lunch and dinner options from hot breakfast, grab-and-go items, a deli counter, pizza oven and seasonal specials. A retail component of the Marketplace showcases specialty and local products, produce, proteins, cooking ingredients and essential household items. Local artisan merchandise, such as custom candles and Balsam logoed pottery, is also available. The concept of the Boarding House Marketplace drew inspiration from businesses like Mazzaro’s in St. Petersburg, The Farmhouse Mercantile and Coffee Bar in Sylva, and Cotuit Fresh Market in Cape Cod.
