Denver, CO - Cherry Hills Country Club (CHCC), one of America’s most iconic golf clubs, has hired Pat Coyner as its Director of Instruction. Coyner, a decorated teacher, coach and mentor for thousands of students of skill levels ranging from beginners to touring professionals, will oversee the club’s instructional programming.

"I am thrilled to have been selected as the Director of Instruction at Cherry Hills Country Club, and I thank the membership and board for this wonderful opportunity to continue my career at such an iconic venue,” said Coyner. “It’s exciting to be part of the rich history and tradition that this club represents in the landscape of American golf and I look forward to establishing our instructional program as one of America’s best.”
As one of the top teachers in the country, Coyner comes to Cherry Hills Country Club from Frederica Golf Club in Georgia, and before that, Baltimore (Md.) Country Club. He studied under PGA Tour instructor/coach Sean Foley since 2009, as well as Top 100 teachers Mike Adams, Mark Blackburn, Stan Utley, Kevin Kirk, Ted Sheftic,
Bernie Najar and James Leitz. He’s also certified in golf biomechanics by Joey Diovisalvi, Dr. Rob Neal, and Dr. Mark Bull.
“I have been fortunate to have learned under some of golf’s greatest teachers and coaches,” added Coyner. “This opportunity positions me to mentor many young players and instructors, while impacting youth, growing the game, and providing game improvement programs for the Cherry Hills Country Club membership that will help to improve everyone’s games.”
Coyner has already begun developing a wide range of instructional programming for all demographics and skill levels at Cherry Hills Country Club. This includes Ladies Golf 101, structured practices for the Ladies Interclub team, PGA Jr. League, Junior Academy, Junior Summer Camps, short game scoring clinics, advanced shot-making clinics, and AimPoint Express green-reading schools. He also brings a high level of technology to the club through TrackMan and Swing Catalyst, and planned guest instructors who will cover Biomechanics, Sports Psychology, Strength and conditioning/speed training, and advanced short game techniques.
Coyner was awarded the two highest honors for instructors in the Middle Atlantic PGA: the Section Teacher of the Year Award and the Section Professional Development Award. He’s also been ranked annually since 2015 in Golf Digest as a Best-In-State Teacher and is listed in GOLF Magazine/GOLF.com as a Top 100 Teacher to Watch. Additionally, he serves as a contributing instructor for PGA Magazine and has presented at numerous Teaching and Coaching Summits hosted by the PGA of America.
"Since joining Cherry Hills as our Director of Instruction, Pat Coyner has made an extraordinary impact - not only on our professional team, but on the instructional culture of the club,” said Bryan Nicholson, PGA Head Golf Professional for Cherry Hills Country Club. “His ability to connect with players of all abilities, from beginners to elite competitors, is truly exceptional. Pat has quickly become one of the most sought-after instructors in the state of Colorado. The culture he has cultivated is grounded in his remarkable ability to communicate, relate, and tailor his approach to each player, resulting in measurable improvement and elevated performance. Our membership is already experiencing the benefits of his leadership, and we are incredibly fortunate to have Pat guiding this essential part of the Cherry Hills golf experience."
As a player, Coyner attended the University of Maryland-Baltimore County on a golf scholarship. He captured three individual titles there and was twice named Team Captain and All-Conference. Coyner also has 12 victories to his credit in his 25+ years as a PGA of America Golf Professional.
ABOUT CHERRY HILLS
Cherry Hills is intertwined in the fabric of American golf history. The club was founded in 1922 on 272 acres south of Denver, Colorado and designed by renowned course architect William Flynn. In 1938, the United States Golf Association awarded Cherry Hills the U.S. Open, the first time the tournament was held west of the Mississippi River. Since then, the course has hosted 15 different national championships, including the most recent U.S. Amateur in 2023. Cherry Hills is the site of one of the most famous opening shots and monumental rounds in championship golf history when Arnold Palmer drove the first green in the final round of the 1960 U.S. Open and made birdie on his way to a final round 65 to win. Cherry Hills is the only course in the U.S., other than Augusta National, where Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus both won a major championship.
The champions who have won at Cherry Hills have included some of the game's greats: Palmer, Nicklaus, Phil Mickelson, Jay Siegel, Hubert Green, Andy North, Ralph Guldahl, Vic Ghezzi, Babe Didrikson-Zaharias and Lewis Oehmig. Cherry Hills is ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Courses by Golf Digest, GOLF Magazine’s Top 100 Courses in the U.S. and Golfweek’s Best Classic Courses and Best Private Courses.
