New resort ranking enhances Terras Da Comporta’s standing in world golf travel

Portuguese resort strengthens reputation with debut in new U.S list of world’s top 100 golf resorts

The status of Terras da Comporta in the global golf tourism sector has reached new heights after the flourishing Portuguese venue was named in a respected industry list of the world’s best golf resorts for the first time.

Terras da Comporta – which was launched three years ago and features two 18-hole championship layouts, The Dunas Course and The Torre Course – was one of 21 new venues to debut in U.S magazine Golf.com’s updated poll of the ‘Top 100 Golf Resorts in the World’.

Compiled by the staff of Golf.com, the prestigious list celebrates an elite collection of established and emerging golf resorts across the world, combining the quality of the golf experience with accommodation, hospitality and the wider destination offering.

Announcing its decision, the magazine’s panel said: “The upscale beach community of Comporta, south of Lisbon, has been called Portugal’s answer to the Hamptons, with piney, sandy land kissed by ocean breezes. What it didn’t always have was world-class golf.
“That changed in 2023, with the opening of the Dunas Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course designed by David McLay-Kidd and seamlessly woven into the rolling dunes. A second 18, by Sergio Garcia, has since rounded out the golf menu at a destination that offers a rare combination of contemporary luxury, nature and an effortless resort lifestyle.”
The latest recognition continues Terras da Comporta’s success story and impressive rise to world prominence, which has included The Dunas Course being named as ‘Europe’s Best Golf Course’ at the 2025 World Golf Awards and being being ranked as Portugal’s new number one by both Golf Digest magazine and Top100GolfCourses.com.

Located one hour south of Lisbon, The Dunas Course and The Torre Course – which are owned by Vanguard Properties, one of Portugal’s leading real-estate developers – are situated in a secluded setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve and have been built using the highest sustainable practices.

Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain, The Dunas Course – architect David McLay Kidd’s first course in mainland Europe – measures 6,646 metres off the back tees and has received international acclaim since being launched in 2023.The Torre Course, European Ryder Cup legend Sergio Garcia’s first major golf course design project and inspired by the Spaniard’s love of Real Club Valderrama, opened for play for the first time last summer and is already being tipped for future stardom.

Rodrigo Ulrich, golf general manager for Vanguard Properties, said: “To be given this accolade by Golf.com for the first time is a tremendous endorsement of what we are creating here at Terras da Comporta, and a further demonstration of the strength of our vision and the quality of the overall experience we offer.

“Our ambition has always been to create something that goes beyond exceptional golf, bringing together world-class course design, nature, sustainability, hospitality and an authentic sense of place. This new ranking is another important milestone for Terras da Comporta and underlines our growing reputation on the international golf stage.”

Vanguard Properties took ownership of Terras da Comporta in 2019 and the development features two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land, and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares.

As well as two 18-hole golf courses, Terras da Comporta will boast a wide range of lifestyle and sporting facilities including tennis, padel, pickleball and horse riding. The development will also include an array of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.

About Terras da Comporta:
The Terras da Comporta development, located in the heart of Comporta, is the result of Vanguard Properties’ acquisition of assets from the Herdade da Comporta Real Estate Fund in 2019.

It is made up of two large developments: Torre, comprising 365 hectares of land in the Alcácer do Sal municipality, and Dunas, which occupies around 1,011 hectares of land in the Grândola municipality. Both enjoy exceptionally tranquil and beautiful locations in dense pine forest. Torre is found near Comporta Village and its iconic rice fields, and Dunas, eight kilometres to the south, is next to Praia do Pego beach.

The Terras da Comporta project is founded on the best environmental, economic and social sustainability practices, assuming a long-term perspective that will undoubtedly contribute to the region’s development. Positioned in the market’s most exclusive segment, where aspects such as quality, comfort and privacy are given top priority, both Torre and Dunas offer a wide range of plots for hotels, tourist and residential condominiums.

There will also be excellent sports facilities including two 18-hole golf courses designed by world-renowned golf architect David McLay-Kidd (Dunas) and US Masters champion Sergio Garcia (Torre). Having been originally launched by McLay-Kidd in 2010, the Dunas Course at Terras da Comporta opened for play on June 1, 2023, with its official inauguration taking place in October 2023. The Torre Course is Garcia’s first major golf course design project and was officially opened on October 4, 2025.
