FIRST THOUGHT

Tournament names routinely change with each new sponsorship deal, but sometimes lost in the shuffle is a bit of the event's overall history. This week's PGA Tour stop, for example, has been known as The American Express since 2020, but the tournament actually dates back to 1960. For a 47-year stretch — 1965-2011 — multi-faceted entertainer Bob Hope's name was attached to the tournament name as either the Bob Hope Desert Classic, Bob Hope Classic or Bob Hope Chrysler Classic. And this week's tournament marks the 50th anniversary of Arnold Palmer's 62nd and final PGA Tour win in 1973. Palmer won the tournament for a fifth time, by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller.
