FIRST THOUGHT

To what degree did weather play a factor in approximately 529 million rounds — the highest total on record, according to the National Golf Foundation — being played in 2021? It certainly did not hurt. The average contiguous U.S. temperature was 54.5 degrees, 2.5 degrees above the 20th-century average and the fourth warmest in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s 127-year period of record. A total of 21 states had a top-five year in terms of the highest average temperature, including golf hotbeds California, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
