When a player hits fairways and greens in regulation, good things are bound to happen. Just ask Austin Smotherman. At the Cognizant Classic Thursday, Smotherman, who returned to the PGA Tour after finishing third on the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, shot a 9-under 62 to hold the solo first-round lead. So, where does Smotherman go from here? The last two times he held or shared a first-round lead on Tour, he finished T23 and T5, respectively. The T5, which came at the 2023 VidantaWorld Mexico Open, is his best finish among four top-10 finishes in 81 prior PGA Tour starts.
