Rounds played results for the months of January through March are a lot like preseason records in any of the major sports — they serve as an indicator, but there's a long season ahead. In golf, the first quarter accounts for just 16% of annual rounds played in the U.S. But it appears that 2023 is off to another fast post-Covid start. According to the National Golf Foundation, rounds are up 17% over the three-year pre-Covid window of 2017-19.

STEVE BREWER
Director of Instruction, Dubsdread Golf Course
The First Call: What is the best advice you have received on your career path?
Steve Brewer: I have been fortunate to be mentored by a number of great teachers and coaches who were more than instrumental in my success by sharing the time and knowledge to help me learn and grow. I would always thank them for their time and help. Many of them would say to me, "No need to thank me, I'm just passing it forward. Just promise me you will do it better than anyone else and pass it forward as well." I have done my very best to do just that.
TFC: Where is there room for growth within the industry?
SB: There is much room on the instruction side with player development programming. Traditional golf instruction did not work for the long-term growth of the game. Now we see more non-traditional learning programs, including skill development on the range and on-course play. This is the future of the game and long-term growth.
USGA: So Yeon Ryu, the 2011 champion, accepts a special exemption into the 78th U.S. Women’s Open, July 6-9 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California. Ryu, of the Republic of Korea, won the first of her two major titles at The Broadmoor's East Course in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
