Cameron Smith finished T4 in his U.S. Open debut in 2015 at Chambers Bay. Since then, the reigning British Open champion, he has struggled mightily in the American Open. His best finish in six starts since that auspicious debut is T38, in 2020. He has missed the cut three times, including in each of his last two starts. Only three reigning Champion Golfers of the Year have won the U.S. Open — Harry Vardon in 1900, Jack Nicklaus in 1967 and Tony Jacklin in 1970. Since 2000, the current British Open winner has finished among the top 5 at the U.S. Open four times — Ernie Els (T5 in 2003), Tiger Woods (T2 in 2006), Ernie Els (T4 in 2013) and Collin Morikawa (T5 in 2022).

CHRISTOPHER RUNYAN
Director of Golf, Circling Raven Golf Club
The First Call: What is one challenge you currently see in the industry?
Christopher Runyan: The amount of information about the golf swing on the internet. Most swing techniques are designed to help a very small portion of the golfing public. Don't take golf swing medicine if your swing is not sick.
TFC: When you look at your career, in what area
do you believe you have evolved for the better?
CR: Customer service. You have to have a servant's heart to want to become a golf professional.
